The OPP are not monsters waiting to send KPS and staff off into wonderland. Everyone that can be employed will be just as if it had gone the other way. I am a Mom of an OPP and very happy he is staying in Kenora where he wants to be. Along with his wife.I have complete confidence policing will be better than ever.

The time to give in will come only AFTER OCCPS makes their determination. Until then the real question should have been 'do you think council should give in before they embarrass themselves in front of a body they HAVE TO be accountable to, and a nation who has them in the spotlight'?
Job Loss???  ( March 12, 2008)
Just to clarify a comment on this page.

1. NO OPP officers would LOSE their jobs if the KPS were sucessful. They may relocate to another area. Likely the OPP would just stop sending new people to the area to replace those leaving vouluntarily.
2. If the KPS were successful 15 new permanent high paying jobs would be added to our community along with 2 or more civilian jobs.
3. Potentially 11 KPS civilian jobs will be lost if the OPP are successful.
4. NO OPP civilian jobs would be lost if the KPS were successful. Again they may have to relocate but would likely be required to manage the integrated system for the other surrounding communities already policed by the OPP.

If you are going to make a statement it should at least be close to the truth and include even the facts that don't benefit your position to be considered worth anything.

I am appalled by many of the allegations that have come out of all of this, such as inferences on www.kenorapolicing.net that somehow councillors who voted in favor of the OPP are guilty of violations not only of city councils code of ethics but more shockingly that they are in violation of the criminal code of Canada! This is beyond ridiculous! Those councillors were given the right to vote as they felt lead. Voting in favor of the OPP is NOT a crime by ANY stretch of the word!

I believe that people have lost sight of the greater picture here. We somehow have the impression that NOBODY wants the OPP to police our community. I know for a fact that there are just as many people on both sides of this issue. The silence of OPP supporters does not mean that they don't care about our community.

Let's face it folks, 3,100 names on a petition is commendable but the equates to about 18% of the entire population. Not really a huge majortiy. If minorities got their way all of the time we would not be having this discussion here. And no, I do not mean ethnic minorities so don't even bother trying to play that card...

This comment site is adding to an already unstable community. Let's try and all get along. The decision has been made so deal with it. I don't hear all the people at the stud mill complaining about lost jobs. The number of OPP officers that would have to be relocated far exceeds the number of jobs that would be lost at the KPS. Keep in mind that the OPP will be hiring as well. Just my thoughts for the day. The officers will be the same the shoulder flash will be different.

I think the actions of the Committee to say KPS is doing more damage than good. If they believe the squeaky wheel gets the grease; they may be well greased but they are being counterproductive.
To be fair  ( March 12, 2008)
It is odd to me there is consistent reference to the larger 'silent majority'. Seems like a clever way to perpetuate a myth. Substantiate it so we can reach a democratic conclusion. If those numbers outweigh the 'vocal minority', it's simple... you win. Get a petition going and explore your contentions. If you surpass over 3,100 signatures in two weeks I'd agree you're on solid ground.

I beleive that those who are in support of the KPS and want to see them stay should continue their fight. My concern is with the petition that was presented. I no longer live in Kenora however I was sent the petition to sign. I certainly would like to see the KPS remain however as I am not a citizen of Kenora I felt that it was misrepresentation if I signed the petition. I witnessed many out of town e-mail addresses in the recipients list. When I questioned the sender about this I was advised that it doesn't matter who signs it... It should be noted that the sender works for the KPS however to avoid a conflict of interest, has been fairly active in the protests however using their spouse's name/e-mail address.
When the biggest argument is that the whole process was not democratic, perhaps the "Keep the KPS" committee should be 100% democratic and professional before calling others on it.
Again... I support keeping the KPS however I do not support the actions of the committee.

Everyone is focusing on what will happen to the KPS, but what of the OPP? It was in the paper but apparently not many people saw it, over 10 OPP officers would have lost their jobs if the kps took over. That is around 10 high paying jobs and forcing those families to relocate. Under the uniforms everyone that works for OPP and KPS are still from Kenora, the only difference is what the name on the uniform is. So lets just put this aside and move on, its about time.

Well, I’m sad to say, it appears the jig is up. Tonight’s Miner & News finally revealed that the KPS – which in 2007, as we all know, handled 9.6 times the criminal caseload as the OPP with 3.2 times the manpower – put in a lot of OVERTIME!
Council is incensed, as well they should be! How dare the KPS work that hard at trying to manage a crime rate that’s become completely unmanageable thanks to the imbalance of resources created by the hybrid policing model!
