Frustrated tax payer  ( January 11, 2009)
The residential areas like Lakeside and others have been terrible. Even before Christmas they were bad. No excuse now that the holiday is over. Get on with the job you are being paid by us taxpayers to do. Way to much concentration on downtown, just so people can get to downtown to shop and then they have to climb over snowbanks to plug the meters. So that area is not being taken care of much either. Well if you cannot even get out of your driveway and have to drive on a cow trail to get to downtown you are not going to go and spend your money downtown. The sidewalks have not been even done in Lakeside and the kids are walking on the road to get to school. Is it going to take someone to be killed by a vehicle before something is done? Question to the city manager in charge of road clearing. Why do you sand when it is snowing and then turnaround and plow it off and then don't put sand back on the roads once it is plowed. Cannot figure that one out. We pay taxes for what? oh yes I forgot roundabouts and Tunnel Island.

I think the City is doing a wonderful job-hats off to them. If anyone complains, go down to City Hall and donate $100 and suggest the money go toward improving the service. Otherwise get a shovel and keep busy.

I think that perhaps snow removal would have been a better idea in say the two weeks before Christmas. During this time of year families get together and places like Valley Drive, Second Street and pretty much every other main route in Kenora had snow banks piled up and parking on streets narrowed them to a lane and a half if these parked vehicles crunched their passenger sides into these snow banks. Why do they not plow and remove snow as they go. Maybe someone could for once take a look at places like schools, hospitals, seniors' care facilities and main streets etc. and have them cleared first. Does someplace like Houghton Road need to have their snow removed instead of the last stretch of Ninth Street (Beaver Brae School to be exact) where there is a tremendous amount of traffic coming and going including school buses trying to deliver our children safely to school!

I agree that the roads are quite slippery, since we knew the storm was coming I think little was done to prepare for it. Up until this storm the snowbanks downtown were cleared away usually the day after they showed up. Took about five days this time. Not ideal, admittedly the trans-Canada is not much better. And insurance companies do take slippery roads into consideration, but only to say you were at fault because you were driving too fast for the condition of the road. Extreme caution is warranted.

I think all snow plowing should be done at night in the busy parts of town. Put the cleaning crews on night shifts for the winter. Why can't you take all the snow on Main Street and push it down to the docks as soon as it snows and then the streets will always be clean. There is nothing going on down there in the winter now that the insurance company is not there. Then the trucks can come in and haul it away not bothering anybody.

We live out Anderson Road, the sand truck sands a nice 3 foot strip down the middle of the road, misses most corners and intersections. Maybe some supervison is needed both for the workers and managment. I don't understand why they are snow blowing in front of the cemetery when some streets in Kenora are not passable. Is there a plan in place or is it just whatever they feel like doing that day?
I find it incredible that there are 4 foot snowbanks downtown to climb over, just to put money in the meter. Get a plan together and get the streets cleaned up, its dangerous and not being done properly.

I think they did a great job clearing the streets of snow in time for the monday commute to work and school. The problem seems to be the stinginess with the sand. All week the streets were trecherously slippery. In regards to the sidewalks on Valley Drive and probably elsewhere, if homeowners would take a few extra minutes to shovel the walk in front of their homes. that would help. If you don't believe that is your responsibility, at least don't throw your driveway snow on the walk, forcing pedestrians and their pets onto the slippery and narrow roadway.

Why don't crews clear the roads near the railway tracks more often too. It's just a matter of time before someone slides into a train or bottoms out going over the mounds and ruins their vehicles. Some more sand on the curves would be nice too. While I'm at it, why didn't council just put four stop signs in, instead of spending millions on a roundabout. Same thing less cost.

Well I'm not complaining. They had my path cleared for Timmys & the roundabout was awesome as far as being clean. I take my hat off for the hard workin snow crew

Sidewalks on Valley Drive have not been plowed since mid December and kids and seniors are walking on the road. Is that safe!!
