How dumb does the government think we are? With the ridiculous hydro rates we pay - highest in the country - carbon money grab taxes, the price of a car, recharge stations where I'm positive you will pay for, no trucks which is a must up here and will cost a fortune, no I will not buy one. They control the gas taxes now they want to control the hydro taxes

I have no doubts that in Canada with the new carbon tax, technology will increase in leaps and bounds. We will become one of the leaders in the world at developing alternative energy. At the very least we can still give the natural resource away and then buy the finished product back.

What 'ongoing developments'?
Battery life, range and the inability to handle a northern winter hasn't changed much in 20 years.

Not a chance. I get excellent mileage from the vehicle I currently own and am looking at a replacement in the spring that is very economical. Electric cars still need energy. That energy isn't cheap to produce. They take a while to charge and it won't be long until the people providing the charging sites want money for the use.

I can't see electric vehicles as a main stream mode of transportation. They don't just charge in 5 minutes and go. Can you imagine how many people will be driving on major highways like the 401 or 400 and run out of juice. There dead on the spot blocking the road and huge backups. Or will be stuck in the middle on now where in January.

At 99.9 (current gasoline cost in Kenora), a 36 mpg car costs $0.10 per mile for gasoline. A battery electric car at 26 cents per kilowatt-hour(Ontario averaged with distribution and H.S.T.added) costs between $0.08-$0.14 per mile for electricity. Add in battery lifespan and upfront costs plus adding a charging system to your home you can easily see unless gas price skyrockets the value is not there.

There is't a battery built yet that would make the cost worthwhile. Even the Space Station has to have its batteries replaced frequently. It is the adage -- Smart Phones, Smart Cars - Dumb People! You still need energy to recharge the batteries.

Between the purchase price cost of hydro and the government trying to scheme everyone in to purchasing one so they can tax you to death for owning one. Soon they will tax you for solar panels because you don't pay to them. Can't afford hydro now never mind an electric car.

I will continue to use gas. Going electric is not my cup of tea. I would have to buy a new car, new boat, new quad, new snow machine. Is the Canadian Government going to give us money to buy electric vehicles? Didn't think so. Gas it is!!!

Not until the batteries can be guaranteed for many years, the range is improved considerably, and the biggest factor is Ontario's electricity rates drop by at least half.
