Locals know where to park for free, even within walking distance to downtown. If they choose to pay for metered parking, that is really their choice. Tourists plug the meters with gusto - why? - Because Kenora's parking meters are really cheap - compare downtown Winnipeg to downtown Kenora and everyone will start to feel better.

Why should we pay on our taxes for this when you can't get parking most of the time now. Who is gonna monitor this free parking when people are parking for days. This idea is a joke and not thought out too well. Angle parking would be a good idea though. You can get double the vehicles on our six lane Main Street.

What do our taxes get us now? Snow removal? NOT! Clear sidewalks to walk on? NOPE! Bylaw enforcement for perhaps keeping bikes, snowmobiles, roller blades, skateboards etc. off of the sidewalks so people can actually walk on them? Another NO Happening!!! Now let's increase those taxes so we give free parking? Maybe we should get back to reality and think these things out before jumping blindly into such absurd ventures and proposals!

I am against the fee increase but am a bit surprised at how many folks would just as soon see all the "greedy Main St. merchants" go away. Maybe you should visit the homes of many of these merchants. They are not "rich" but simply hard working people who have chosen entrepreneurship as a viable job. Anyone is eligible to start a new business but until you walk a mile in their shoes...

It is mostly tourists that park downtown in the summer. Why should our taxes increase, so they can park for free? Very bad idea, our taxes are already high enough. Free parking wouldn't even cover the cost of the increase in our taxes. Why don't you let the merchants have free parking. By having a card they put on there vechile to prove they work downtown. This is what they did at the mall, so your vechile wouldn't get towed.

What a joke! Taxes need to go down not up!!! I live out in the bush and am down town maybe once or twice a week and for maybe and hour at the longest. I can fork out the three quarters rather then the stupid tax increase. Who thinks of these stupid ideas anyways?

The current income from the parking meters is enough to pay for the two employees looking after the meters.
once there are no more meters, there should be no more need for these two emloyees. Lay them off and save us the tax increase.

Since this is an "idea" the merchants have come up with, let them monitor the parking meters, lay off the two Parking Meter Maids and voila, there is the saving.
Why don't the merchants just refund the cost of a meter when we make a purchase?

Approximately 28 people have said yes so far,but I have yet to read one comment why free parking for increase in taxes is a great idea. I sure hope someone on city council is reading this. 180 out of 210 don't agree with it.

I would like to see in black and white exactly where the loss from parking comes from. Show me an expense sheet of what the meters generate, how much it cost for meter people wages, benefits, pension, uniforms, before I would be willing to pay more in taxes. Many times you circle the block 3 or 4 times before you give up and shop somewhere else.
