People that volunteer get great satisfaction from helping their community. If you're feeling a sorry for yourself and how bad things are for you, help someone or a community group out. You'll feel a lot better about yourself.

I see it in hockey - too much on people's plates - need more folks to simply step forward and say how can I help. I'm sure it's the same in other sports, 5% of the parents are doing 100% of the volunteering...

Until I began to volunteer myself, I had no idea how many things get done because of the selfless work of others. The service organizations are the same. The same few doing a lot in the name of many. The way I see it, you have to decide what type of community you want to live in and then take appropriate steps to move in that direction. The hard work done by Kinsmen, Rotary, Lions, Kiwanis as well as volunteers for crimestoppers, Making Kenora Home, Terry Fox Run, Relay for Life, Meals on Wheels etc... There is a spot for every person who wants to help whether it is for one event, annually or joining an organization that constantly volunteers.

History will continue to repeat itself, the same people who have volunteered and kept these events going will tire from lack of support and help and when things like Harbourfest and the Bass Tourney are no longer, everyone will just complain instead of attempting to become part of the solution.

I've noticed that it is always the same parents volunteering throughout the year in the the various sports. If you kid plays, it is time to step up. Show them you're willing to put the time, not just the money, into whatever they are involved in.

I'm concerned. You don't see much support from many tourist camp owners, except a couple local owners (finacial or other help). I'd really like to see more Native kids in sports and their parents helping out too.

There is definitely a concern about the volunteers but I would think that the concern is less about burning out but these volunteers getting frustrated. If you look at any of the major events in Kenora you generally see a lot of the same people doing the work. I applaud these people. Far too often you hear people complain that there is nothing to do in Kenora yet these people are not doing anything about it.
