"Brilliant" Selling the only thing in our city that actually makes money!! Just like selling the power house back when ever that happened.
What next, why not sell Public Works, contract out fire fighting.
Bell is out to turn profits, they will be just like Shaw buying Norcom, when does the 20% rate increase happen? I would be ashamed to identify myself as a councillor!!

hmmm !!! KMTS was MTS owned anyway (rite) or am I wrong? NOT WRONG
Sheesh  ( January 4, 2008)
KMTS is sold to Bell. MTS is responsible for our cellular network. TBTel slides in the month before the sale. Bell and MTS are direct competitors.
I see this happening in the next 2 years:
1 - Loss of our cellular network [TBtel smelt this one coming]
2 - Loss of KMTS jobs - customer support will be the first to go, since they will centralize the support services. Call 310-Bell right?
3 - Then we will lose our higher end technicians unless they conform to the Bell way.
etc etc etc
SO with all this in mind, how in the world is KMTS supposed to keep their brand?
Bad bad move. Now the City council has a 51 million dollar fund to play with, and they are going to hire a fund manager to take care of it. Unless they reinvest in a different area that will generate income, our little town just became more stagnant. First the mill, then Norcom [isn't Shaw WONDERFUL????????] and now KMTS?

As far as I can tell, the telephone system is one of the few ways this town makes money. It would be bad news to sell it to a corporation.
Concerned Tax Payer  ( January 4, 2008)
Here we go again, remember when the Mayor and council sold the Norman Dam? That was a bad decision as is selling KMTS. It has been a source of revenue for this town for many decades and would continue to be. The 27 million will be spent by council in the blink of an eye. When it's gone it's gone. A better idea would be to take the 1 or2 million yearly profit that KMTS generates and give it back to the TRUE owners, the TAXPAYER, each year in the form of tax cuts. This is yet another seriously bad decision by our council. Say NO to this, as you will end up paying dearly in the final outcome.

The top 10 reasons to "choose Kenora) just got shortened (taken from the City of Kenora website)
10 Reasons To Choose Kenora
7. “Telecommunications Infrastructure”
Kenora features the most up-to-date Telecommunications infrastructure in Northwestern Ontario. A variety of solutions are available, from fibre optics to high speed Internet. Kenora Municipal Telephone System offers the lowest cost line charges in Ontario, and flexible services

If the city makes 5% off the interest (doubtful) that would translate into 1.35 million profit which is less than what the City soaks it for currently. Meanwhile jobs will be lost in two to three years - Bell is out to make a profit, not so subsidize the City of Kenora. And our competitive advantage on low cost rates just went out the window. Unf*#@ble believable!

First of all we get rid of the City Police.
Now we are getting rid of the KMTS.
The next thing we will be going with a volunteer Fire Department.
So I feel sorry for the next company that wants to set up shop here in Kenora.
Council can say "Yes, we got rid of the cops and the phone and the fire, so welcome to our progressive community!"
