I agree with Bob. Tourism ideas are for the most part stuck in the past. Are we only about hunting and fishing? We need forward thinkers. Water based tourism at a reasonable price is a great priviledge we enjoy in Kenora. On an unrelated note, we need to be less ignorant about people with accents or those not so informed about local customs. Why do people travel to new places? To feel welcome, to experience something new and to enjoy themselves. Too much redneck mentality and alcoholism makes us seem like backwater country. Is that the image we want to promote?

I live here year round and I wonder why tourists come back here. The "service industry" could learn a lot about service! If it was not for the greed of business owners in Kenora we, the locals and tourists alike, could go about our business a little quicker. You have to spend money to make money, hire some staff even if you have to pay them a decent wage.

Tourists ARE doing us a favor by being here, they're bringing money into our city. Keeping businesses going! The don't on the other hand need to act that way, they are still visiting our city and should be respectful. If we gave them the same attitude and welcomed them into Kenora we could all get along. Perhaps the first step people in Kenora could do is to refer to "Tobans" without saying it with the sound of disgust in their voice and a dirty look on their face! Kenora is known for being cliquey, maybe we have some growing up to do!

Living in Kenora all my life, I was ashamed last week for any tourist visiting our area. There were so many people passed out around town it was disgusting. People were passed out in planters by the post office, on the green area across from the mall, in the parkade area and at the Kenora Legion lawn... it was absolutely frightful. If that is a way to attract tourists to our area and treat them with that scenery you can be they likely won't be back! With mill closures and lay-offs going rampant in Kenora, I would hope businesses and residents would re-think there ideas on how valuable tourism is for Kenora! Come on people, we have a beautiful town, why not show it proudly?

I worked in the public for many years, and the worst tourists ever were from Man. They think they own us. If you drive down certain roads in the area we have had them tell us to get off because this is their road they pay to keep it up, as far as I'm concerned they can go home and stay there. My husband has said we should buy a house in Man. and go there on weekends then we would'nt have to put up with the 'Tobans and the high prices here in the summer.

Tourism is about the only thing we have going for us in Kenora. The main industries have closed down and are being torn down. People working in the service industry, ie servers, cooks, etc. make lower wages but service reflects the tips one receives. Remember the courses that persons working in the tourist industry had to take in years gone by? The " We Treat You Royally" program. We have to get back to this type of service. One of my pet peeves is going to a restaurant with my wife and have the server greet us with " How are you guys today?" If my wife was a guy, I would not have married her. Look at the flags flying around the city, torn and tattered and in some cases with no knowledge of flag etiquette. ie, the Metis flag flying senior to the Canadian Flag. Tourism can be a viable industry but we have to start from the grass roots and work our way up. Let's be proud of our community and work towards raising our standards of service to encourage tourism from all over the world. Our population is aging which means that more people will be travelling, so let's take advantage of this a become more tourism friendly.

I think the reason Kenora is negative towards tourists is because the city wants the tourists treated like royalty and yet treat the year round residents like peasants. Yes, some contribute to the economy, but we spend money locally all year.

I don't the question has any validity since we are all individuals and each have our own take on how we are to tourists. I do think that tourism will play a large role in the future of Kenora and those that don't like it will most likely have to get out of the way of those that are embracing it. The $30/hr jobs our Dad's had are gone. We all have to find a new way to earn a good living and tourism is but one of those.

I am so glad when September comes to get our town back. We should promote something for the residents all year round, not just the "tourists".

As a current summer resident and former Kenora resident, I continue to be amazed at Kenora's brazen disrespect and scorn for the many tourists who bring millions and millions of dollars into the region every year. What will it take to make citizens realize that Kenora's bread and butter could be made off the tourism industry (look at Banff, or Niagara-on-the-Lake)? With all the mill closures, it is just plain old meat-headed arrogance to continue to regard tourists as vermin who go away when the weather cools down! Wake up Kenora! Milk it for all its worth, treat the tourists with some respect and watch the dollars pour in! So what if you can't park downtown in July and August... walk, be healthy and be happy that the town is making some much-needed cash!!
