If the KPS is to go, they are gone forever. If you want statistic driven policing (traffic tickets) the OPP is the way to go! Council has to take a good look at what they are getting into and if they want Orillia to determine how things will be done and at what cost! Just call the OPP office at 548-5534 after 5 p.m. and see if you get an answering machine!

There should be an analysis done on the effectiveness of each police service, and that, with cost, should determine the outcome of Policing. We don't want an ineffective service just because it's cheaper.

As for the comment about KPS and OPP having the same "requirements", not even close. The psy exam for OPP is very crucial to decide who represents our Province, and who keeps us as safe from harm as possible; I would much rather have an OPP officer defending my rights and safety over a KPS officer. Have you not noticed the difference in personality, articulation, assistance with completing a statement and the overall respect for community members? By far, OPP officers are professionals.

If you go by cost alone, you only get what you pay for. The OPP have a lot more resources to fall back on than does the KPS. If KPS were to become the only police agency in Kenora, how many more officers, cruisers etc. would have to be added. Just ask what happened when Dryden took over policing in Barclay Twp.!

It should be based upon our needs for policing today and in the future. Demographics are quickly changing here and we need all the help we can get. I think we're all willing to pay a premium for quality policing.

The bigger question is can we afford not to have KPS?

If we are comparing apples to apples, then yes, the decision should be based on cost alone. If the constables on patrol on both sides, receive the same training and can provide similar levels of service, then absolutely, cost should be the determining factor.

Why are we limiting ourselves to the OPP and KPS? Why not the Treaty 3 police? We won't have to worry about racism.

The Kenora taxpayer isn't getting value for money spent, get rid of the KPS.

While cost is a huge factor, you have to look at the level of training, ongoing education and technical resources.
The OPP have a superior basic training, with on going upgrades. They also appear to have a better work ethic and a stronger commitment to law enforcement.
When it comes to back up for line officers, they can access everything from forensics, undercover investigators, helicopters and a special tactics unit.
