Obsessed to the point we are putting ourselves at risk. With every bad bacteria, there are many good ones. When we use products daily that kill 100 per cent of the bacteria we are in contact with, we kill a lot of good ones.
Daily exposure to bad bacteria also help us build up immunities to them. With no exposures we are generating "super bugs" be it VRSA or MSRA, we are finding more and more.
Good bacteria help in digestion, eliminating them can lead to stomach problems and that's just the start.
A couple years ago there was actually legislation being proposed to limit the amount of anti bacterial products.

I think some are fanatics, most take general care but some are just plain ol' disgusting and could care less about themselves, their children and passing germs along needlessly.

Our community certainly isn't. Have you seen our streets?

One thing that is not mentioned yet is the drop in immune function in most people. This lack of vitality in our immune systems caused by poor air, water and food quality (think hot dogs and doritos) has led to increases in cancer and auto immune disorders. It also allows lesser infections and viruses to become deadly.

Right you are Jim. It's been well documented that over-use of antibiotics is creating more resistant 'bugs'. Unfortunately, these 'superbugs' will affect even healthy people, not just the ones who demand antibiotics for every little sniffle. The misguided and irresponsible are ruining this planet for everyone.

No matter rich or poor, cleanliness is something we can all control. It also promotes a sense of pride and well being and goes along way towards our self-esteem.

What a question. How else do we battle all these diseases, can not always have a pill for a cure.

While Mr. Blight may not have died from food poisoning, sadly many other people did, often the young, sick and elderly. People live alot longer now because of public health measures to protect food, water and the air we breathe (inspite of the pollution and chemicals now present in our environment).

As children, we were told that we would eat a bushel of dirt in our lifetime. In those days we did not hear of people with alergies, bronchitis and only seldom of hayfever. I think we had more resistance to decease years ago.
