Cameras are a good thing for Kenora. The one time I stayed overnight in Kenora at the Kenrica Hotel there was a drunken rampage going on all night in the streets, through the hotel. It was a nightmare. In all my travels I have never endured such a situation. There were no police to be seen. I was very frightened. Friends with me from Los Angeles were not impressed. I looked out of the hotel window and saw young people placing beer bottles on parking meters and then hitting them so they smashed on the ground. Shameful and sad for tourism.

Of course I would support it. I have no plans on committing any crimes myself, and hope that these cameras will help catch those who do and eventually reduce the crime rate. The comments about big brother made me laugh.

The comments made about Big Brother and bathroom cameras are not far-fetched. Cameras have been installed in school washrooms.
There are down sides to video surveillance. It has been proven that the 'unforgiving eye' (controlled by the scoper) centers on the homeless and certain races for example and IS an invasion of privacy. The length of video was much longer on certain individuals for no reason other than the choice made by the scoper. Perhaps you'll be a ten minute target...... then what???
I might add, it appears cameras do not prevent the crime.... they simply push it elsewhere.

What a great idea. Cameras work well in other jurisdictions. Not only that, but, the photo evidence will help lay the blame for vandalism etc on the heads of those responsible, NOT those perceived to be responsible.

Who cares? Kenora will always attract tourists. For 2 months of the year

Yes it is an excellent idea. It will save on vandalism and if you aren't doing anything wrong what should you be worried about. It's not infringing on your privacy when it's downtown in the community.

Any comparisons to big brother are a little far fetched. This is not a tool to invade privacy but a method of reducing vandalism and street crime. How many times have we seen the windows on the Kenrica corner broken, or broken, upturned garbage cans? We all pay for that through increased insurance premiums and taxes. Let's catch these few who cause problems for us all.

Yes, watch. It only makes sense.

Silly idea actually - with the cost to put in, and the salary to have someone monitor it? We could have 3 beat police for the area for the evening for the cost cost. Downtown is just a few blocks - the capital to install it just isn't worth it... and the vandalism that will invite for the summer!

I think cams are ok. With the ecomony a little on edge in Kenora at present, the possibility of theft or mischief could increase and it may be just the deterent the town needs. Kenora will never go down the tubes. It will always attract tourists for its beauty.
