I am 100 per cent in favour of surveilance cameras. It would assist the police in laying charges as well as act as a deterent for first timers. The foundation that we lay today will determine our future.

Unfortunately as much as we love to kid ourselves, most of the violence is not from the street people, it is from our own children.. such as the group that love to hang at the Shell and beat on drunk tourists.. charming.. really

The street people should be the least of our concern. Everyone in this city should take a drive around Kenora after dark. The people hanging around are kids between 10 - 16 years of age. What are they doing at this time of night? Where are their parents? And it is a lot of local kids out there who are making it unsafe for tourists and locals to take a stroll at night. Even at 3 am there are plenty of young kids out that are up to no good.

How many residents have taken a drive through Kenora after dark? It is not the street people that are causing the safety concerns. What are 10-16 year old kids doing downtown at 3 am? Where are their parents? We need more concerned citizens like the Citizens on Patrol group.

I feel more at risk in summer, and not from the "street people" everyone has mentioned.
Try walking down Main st. when the bars empty and watch the mindless idiots who come out after a night of drinking. They are loud, obnoxious, slanderous, beligerant and destructive. The worst night of all is the Saturday night of harbourfest. These drunks are the worst. They wander through traffic, the police watch yet they are allowed to continue their antics. Not the behaviour of a real street person, they were in jail hours ago!

One would think with the numbers of police the city has on the payroll that crime would not exist!

Seeing a street person passed out is the least of it, we've all seen them doing worse things - it is disgusting and embarassing. Kenora needs to deal with this issue, a great job was done in marketing this town as a tourist destination, now we've got to live up to our reputation as a beautiful, safe place!

Even if the video camera caught the vandals. They go to jail for how long and they are back on the street again. You can't fine them because they have no money.

Strategically placed videocameras monitored centrally by Police, Firehall, or other continuously manned stations would reduce not only the incidence of vandalism and violence but also the cost of patrolling the downtown area. Foot patrols would be a poor substitute. Invasion of privacy can not be a serious concern since its monitoring the public areas for a valid reason.

It's bad enough trying to walk during the day, never mind at night. Something has to be done to get the unsightly off the streets. For a tourist town I would be cleaning up the the people that sit and drink across from the mall.
