I don't think it's just Kenora that won't see new big industry, but all of Ontario. As long as electricity is double most other provinces and taxes are so high it will be hard to attract new manufacturing. Also if First Nations keep being unco-operative mining will not be interested in developing any new sites.

We really need to attract a large industry to Kenora for a diverse range of higher paying jobs. Small business generally only pays minimum wage and that is not enough for housing etc. A large industry would help other small business to develop and run sustainable businesses. A blend of large and small businesses are essential to have a thriving community.

It will be small business. However, we have enough restaurants and marinas. Small manufacturing sites would be the answer. Being a small seasonal town, the months out of the tourist season need to have some full-time jobs.

Somebody should inform Mayor Dave that before an
ore body can be mined it first must be discovered
and then drilled off to prove its profitability.
The simple fact is that no company is going to
gamble many millions of dollars trying to find
an ore body in Ontario when the native population
with the blessing of Premier Kathlenn Wynne is in the background waiting to lay claim to any
discovery. Mining exploration in Ontario is done
like dinner.

Neither small business or industry will help the job situation here. I agree with Matt's opinion. This town is turning into a ghost town. There are no big box stores to shop at besides Wal-Mart which gets pretty tiring. Our mall is a laugh, embarassment actually. This town will not grow, it will only get samaller. It's no wonder people leave Kenora to shop in Winnipeg or the states. There is just NO selection here what-so-ever. We certainly do not need anymore restaurants because they don't stay open anyways. You drive around town and they all say closed, it's a laugh. There are no deals. The grocery stores, the two we have, are ripping us off left, right and center. Even Ted's prices are getting high, no big deals there. So unless you were born into money or inherited a large sum, the average family doesn't stand a chance. Don't get me wrong, I love Kenora, as far as the lake and geographics go, but that's all it has going for it, and thank God we have that. As for shopping locally, I do my part, but if I can't access what I want here, I will certainly go somewhere else to get it and no one can blame me. I don't believe that small business will ever survive here, just not enough incentive for them to put up shop here and survive.

A major industry needs to be attracted to supply higher paying jobs and spinoff business. I still fail to see any results from the city economic development officer, the new marina in Norman fails to supply any higher wages, yet it was almost billed as the second coming of Abitibi by council.

i believe that with every small business that opens another one shuts down, or they do not last because of Kenora being seasonal. Big business is gone. We need a large store to run against Wal-Mart. I do not believe that the City will grow anytime soon, it will shrink if anything.

We seem to forget that mining at one time was the biggest industry in Northwestern Ontario. It is a cyclical industry as is forestry, just ask the residents of Atikokan. Mayor Dave is living in la la land when he says that mining is the future. Yep just like in the "house in the box".

Unfortunately it will be small business creating future, not so well paid jobs. Kenora's days as an industrial town are gone. With the high price of energy, industry can't afford to be here.
There is a lot of talk about mining and the well paid jobs that go with it. However with all the federal and provincial absurd regulations it won't be happening soon.
