I for one knew there was going to be low voter turnout. Older people are old school, they want to do things the old way. Most of them hate computers and do not wish to give out info on the phone. The young people in Kenora just do not care because they have no future here no matter what. They plan on leaving here anyways so they don't vote.
Cynical in Kenora  ( November 4, 2014)
Perhaps the reason for low voter turnout is the elimination of the secret ballot. Logging into an Internet website to vote - using a PIN assigned to your name makes some people think of George Orwell's book "1984".

Well we have another four years of what? First comment from the newly elected council was our major problem is the homeless people in kenora? Well there's going to be a lot more homeless here soon... how many jobs has the last council brought into this town? I haven't seen any unless you count the 50 or more people the town hired, pretty sad as far as I'm concerned. We have an economic development officer - how many new jobs has she brought in zero. We have a major problem here may be some of these high paid employees should be walking the street and not costing the taxpayers. Another issue soon to come up is the Rec Center expansion and it will, at a cost of about $40 million before it's done. Mark my words it will go through no matter what the cost will be, then watch your taxes go up and remember you voted for these people.

I think that the people elected will do a good job for Kenora. You do need experience on council and I think we have a good mix of old and new. Mayor Dave has done a good job of getting Kenora on the government maps both federally and provincially. This helps to obtain funding when needed. I really would like to see our property taxes go down and hope the new council can do something about it. We do need industry more then more tourism.
unbelievable  ( November 3, 2014)
How convenient that there was a senior citizens forum for Mayor Dave to discuss their needs just before the election. Perhaps he should do the same for the younger generation. Maybe he could explain to them what Kenora has in store for them once they graduate from high school or university. Yes, it's their dream to one day work at Tim Hortons, Walmart or catering to tourists. It's so sad that many have no choice but to leave town for a good job. Perhaps the reason voter turnout wasn't so great was because many young people have become disillusioned and feel they have no voice. It would have been a breath of fresh air to have some new faces on council, with new ideas. Instead, we are stuck with the same mentality for another four years. I too, feel Mr. Kitowski would have made an excellent addition to council. Shame on you voters!
Wake up voters  ( November 2, 2014)
People need to stop voting based on name recognition and start voting based on candidate platforms, presentation in debates and interest in benefiting Kenora as a whole — not catering to special interest groups. Become informed people! Kenora will not move forward unless voters start choosing elected officials based on their vision for a Kenora that benefits all residents — not a select few.
REALLY PEOPLE?  ( November 2, 2014)
The young person (a nice enough fellow) that failed to get elected is not the young leader of the future. Anyone who heard Robert Kitowski speak would know that he is "heads above" most of the candidates elected. The only thing worse than low voter turnout is voters that do not educate themselves about the candidates before they vote and let the "old boy's club" pick and promote "name recognition" candidates for you. A terrible disservice for the citizens of the city. And by the way if you're voting for candidates who cite "honesty" and "integrity" as a reason to vote for them — you may want to ask yourself who they are trying to convince.

No. However those who got in did so by democracy. I hope they heard the calls from the citizens to start solving other issues.
What was shocking was the low turn out. How much easier could it be, to grab your phone or get to your computer. There was no excuse for not voting.

First off, congratulations to the new council. Although some of the newcomers have their own agendas, time will tell if our trust in you is deserved. To the old council, you had some challenges and for the most part did fine. I notice in the news that there will be a substantial saving of policing costs over the next 5 years. I hope the new council will take it upon themselves to pass this saving along to the taxpayers of Kenora.

The line-up seems to be reasonable. In one of the candidate forums our mayor (who's campaign listed honesty as a reason to elect) responded to the casino question "indicating" he didn't support it in our community. Maybe he forgot that he "clearly" voted in favour of it in the Oct 4, 2012 special council meeting that put Kenora on the list for a casino. Do we have to keep our eye on him?
