lets be realistic  ( May 20, 2007)
Take a look at other towns where the OPP low balled its bid and did not include added charges for things like arrests. In Fort Frances the cost of the OPP with it's hidden charges are double the cost of the municipal police. Let's not forget that OPP 911 is now handled out of Thunder Bay, do you want someone 600 km away to handle your emergency?

Council must remember that with a local force they still have some control on wages and cost increases...not so if OPP takes over. With a local force you can always switch to provincial police but if OPP is chosen Kenora will never afford to go back to KPS!! Like any contractor (OPP) they bid cheap but after a few years the price skyrockets as they know that you can't switch back.

It's not only the cost factor it is also the attitude factor for me. When you have these people who put on a uniform and sunglasses and think they are better than anybody else I think they need an attitude adjustment. When dealing with the public take the glasses and attitude and put them in your back pocket.

I stand behind my previous comment RCMP should be the only force needed.

The Kenora Police Force are way overworked and under appreciated. People often complain about the money that it costs to have a police force but then are the same people who complain when there are not enough police to handle calls on a timely basis. One only has to listen to the scanners and realize how bloody busy these people are.

Both police services do the same work. Police are governed by the same rules and standards across the province. The biggest difference is with the KPS there is local control by the Police Services Board. The KPS bargain with the local board. With the OPP there is no control. Everything done with the OPP and their contracts is handled through Orillia not Kenora. The OPP will tell us how much to pay and how many officers and cruisers we need. Council needs to slow down and take the time to educate themselves before a mistake is made. Once the KPS is gone they will never come back.

KPS are costing the tax payers of Kenora a fortune. Now a day it's all about the money. We as community can not afford to keep this up.
