I am not Catholic and my children attend a catholic school. This decision was based on language not religion. We emphasize at home that catholicism is but one religion of the world and we must respect others as well. Since religion is part of all cultures and therefore part of our history, our children need to learn and understand the role religion has played in that history. Whether the parents or the school undertakes that role, it should include several of the major religions of the world.

Yes I do. Our ignorance of the world's religions has, and will continue to, lead into trouble. I also agree with the earlier comment that school systems being based by religions are part of the problem. I suspect our children's children will never know what a religion-based school is, or at least I hope so. We have so many people now that say they are a certain faith yet practice virtually none of that faith's teachings, that our children are losing faith in the concept of religion itself. If 50% of marriages end in divorce, how does that measure up against the religious requirement of "til death do us part?" Religion is quickly losing its' credibility within our youth, and we have only their parents behaviors to blame. Simply put, kids don't really know what religion means today, unless it makes them miss hockey practice on Sunday.

It shouldn't.

Religion and the worlds history that goes with it should be a part of our kids education. Not just the main stream religions, but most religions.
Teach them to understand and tolerate the religions we as adults laugh at or scorn. Believe me the world would be a safer place!!

One only has to check the history books and see what religion has brought us in the past and possible future...War !

It plays a big role in kids lives. Families who take the time together to go to church and teach their kids religion, usually have fewer problems.
In todays world religious education should cover all religions. perhaps the next generations will understand and tolerate other religions better than we do now.

I go to S.T.A and I do not believe we should be forced to take religion classes. They push the catholic religion on you. We should learn and understand about other religions in the world equally. This will help people understand different points of view. But in my religion classes we do nothing like this. The whole teaching method is only based on the Cathlolic religion. They say that their religion is the right one and all others are wrong. I'm not religious and don't enjoy religion classes but I wouldn't mind them if they stopped teaching with a bias. Stop preaching "the word of God" and trying to convet people.

I think that all kids should be educated in all the major religions in the world, their histories, their belief systems, their values, culture, etc. I also believe that religion-based school systems are extremely counter-productive in reaching that goal. We all need to know more about other cultures & religions and how to accept others into our culture.

Yes. Kids should understand the role religion plays in the world and the community. They should also understand that it doesn't matter what religion their friends are. The church has not been a solid guide of consistent morals, but parents can be, regardless of their particular faith. There are several major religions in the world - are they all right? Are they all legitimate? Is it OK to have doubts? Is it OK to have no religion? How would YOUR kids answer those questions?
