Yes, kids need to know as much as possible. As demonstrated by the comments from "Mary" and "Concerned", religion can come with judgement, which leads to other things. Our country was not founded on christian values, but values and rights, both of which have changed over time and will continue to change. Governments struggle ongoing to keep religion out of government for reasons that become more obvious as time passes. As for a lack of religion being "self-serving"... Thou shalt not judge, how ironic? Religion has become the ultimate hypocrisy. The best thing we can do is expose our kids to all of it, and help them use their judgement and values instilled by the parents to make good choices.

It is hard to think religion makes a difference when most children and young adults dislike going to church and do not pay attention to the message when they do attend. It is really a matter of parents and adults in their lives teaching them respect for other people and other peoples property. That does not seem to be taught at home or church.

If religion is going to church every sunday because it's the "in thing" to do and your way of life does not follow the teachings, then no, being "religious' just teaches the children to be hypocrites. If religious means parents by example teaches their children to live with morals and values and respectful of others, then yes, religious should be instilled in the school system.

Why are people so afraid of religion? Why are we so willing to give up our own beliefs in favour of others. We can't say the Lord's prayer in school any more because it may offend someone but what about me. It offends me that we don't say the prayer. Don't my religious beliefs count for anything in my own country?

There is no such thing as "no religion". A religion without God is self-serving. That is what we teach today. Religion has been pushed out of our public system and the results are obvious.
Reflect on how religion has affected the worlds history? War has been inevitable (for religious reasons but also for greed - a lack of religion).Religion has shaped our music, arts, literature touching peoples minds and souls for the incredible good! Where would this world be without God?

first to the person calling themselves a student, if you dont like catholic religion why did you go to s.t.a.? religion should play a part in our education system, this country was founded on christian beliefs and that is what we are, not muslims nor buhddists, people of canada fought in two wars to keep our values.religion is the opiate of the masses, it seperates man from beast.

"A Student" I think you are missing the point about TA. It is part of the Catholic School Board so of course there is going to be an emphasis on the Catholic faith. Students attending schools in this system should expect to attend Religion classes.

For me, there is a huge difference between Religion and spirituality. I think that all children should be taught the principals of religion, i.e. the ten commandments, and once they become adults, they can then make an informed decision as to whether or not they wish to further develop their spirituality. To be taught that one "religion" is better than another or that one will not be allowed into heaven if they do not follow a particular religion really goes against all the principals of religion. Further, it is not religion that starts wars - it is humans.

Yes. In my parents generation, many times a single religion was imbedded within most of the communities and the church was respected above all. Today, most religions have been diluted and more and more are springing up. The church is no longer a guiding light, and in many cases is a source of shame. Our kids need to know all about this - the good and the bad, and they should be allowed to make thier own decisions. They will anyway, as they always have, we should be more open about religious choice, including the choice not to have a religion in your life.

I think parent's should be teaching thier children about diversity, tolerance (acceptance), values and morals. this is much more important than just religion
