The Manitoba contractor in charge of the Beaver Brae renovation will be hiring local tradespeople to do the job, not unlike an Ontario company from Thunder Bay would. Thank you KPDSB for creating opportunities for local trades!

I worked as a skilled tradesman most of my life. Got my start in the Machine Shop in Beaver Brae. Over the years I have trained many apprentices all who went on to steady employment and in some cases own their own business and are training more apprentices. Everyone needs a carpenter, plumber or an electrician at some point. A lot of people I trained have stayed in kenora, or when I was in various other towns, a lot of them stayed in their home towns.

When the Keewatin Patricia District School Board gives local trade jobs to Manitoba you know they don't support the trades for Ontario students in the school system. When problems arise after the Wpg Co does the $7.3 million reno at Beaver Brae, good luck getting local trades person to fix any deficiencies. I hope Kenora voters remember this next school board election.

I think trades are very important, many students cannot afford the huge cost of university. But I don't believe the Keewatin Patricia District School Board will support trades because they gave the $7.3 million dollar tender to a Manitoba company, instead of supporting LOCAL trades people. The small difference in the bid should not have been an issue. Shame on you for giving away local jobs.

Completing Grade 12 is job one for any potential skilled trades-person. Opportunities already exist for skilled tradespeople however current Red Tape is making it difficult for Ontario to keep up in training skilled tradespeople. Making Ontario Open for Business Act which replaces portions of Bill 148 (Liberal) proposes changes to current regulatory burdens and barriers placed on employers and apprentices.

For sure, many students and families cannot afford the thousands of dollars to attend university for years, doing a trade is affordable and takes less time and they are able to move into the work force much sooner and not have huge student loans to pay for years. This in turn helps the economy, they will be able to purchase homes, vehicles, and contribute to their communities.

Speaking from my own experience Beaver Brae had a wonderful shop program, but it wasn't until after school that I obtained my trade. I worked for a great company which supported apprentices by topping up their wage from UI. If businesses need trades people now they should show they are serious by giving a decent wage to their apprentices.

i agree but you can plainly see over the years nobody wants these jobs

I really don't believe students want these jobs. along with many other types of work out there. Why do you think we have trouble getting people in Pinecrest or Birchwood, everyone wants more money and easier work.

I think schools should not have any structure, just let kids be kids, open the library, gym and play ground. Kids have the internet and google.
