IT'S HELL TO BE POOR..........

The rich get richer...the poor get poorer. The cost of hydro, gas, food is outrageous and even the middle bracket income earners have a tough time making ends meet. You have a single parent trying to make a go of it and bills don't get paid, mouths don't get fed.

It is some people's own fault for their poverty yes, but in most cases people do TRY to get ahead but it just doesn't seem to work. You try working for $8 per hour being a single mom and paying $800 rent. Yes there is daycare subsidy but only in government facilities and there is a waiting list miles long to get into those. So the answer is NO it's not everyone's fault for being poor and some help is out there but not enough!

There are plenty of job available in Kenora. All paying minimum wage. If a person was fortunate enough to find an employer who would offer full time work, at minimum wage, that person could earn approximately $16,640 per year before takes. Working full time still puts you at poverty level. Full time usually equates to benefits, and that just doesn't happen. Employers won't give any.

That is the point of concern people will and are starting to leave our fine town/city the emphasis on tourism as a main stay is fast becoming a reality unless there is some unforeseen job creation Kenora will rely solely on its tourism to survive. The big question is can it?

I think a high number of these families, for some reason, are responsible for their own predicament. There are so many funded programs available in this community, it all stems down to who takes advantage of them and who does not. For people who have the initiative, they can return to school and receive training to open opportunities. Why they choose not to? It could be a lack of ambition. Welfare and UI agencies should put restrictions on collecting benefits... as for the daycare excuse, there is also government funding for that? There virtually is NO excuse for single families to live in poverty.

Most people do not choose poverty (would you like to be poor?) but there are many obstacles to employment such as inadequate housing, a terrible local transit system, lack of education (therefore few employable skills), racism, addictions, violence against women and children - just to name a few. Kenora needs to focus on how they can help the people who are trying to improve their lives, rather than blaming people for being poor.

It's a statistic that shapes the social make-up of our town over time - from enrollment in youth programs to school attendance to crime to inability to attend post-secondary training opportunities. Kenora is a very unique town in terms of its' demographics and provincial geographic isolation, thus we're always going to have social issues linked to these factors.

There are lots of jobs out there, so why is there poverty. Even handicapped individuals have opportunities for employment.
How many of these "impoverished" people choose to be that way??
Dave  ( September 13, 2007)
Poverty equates to crime. Already there is more violence on our streets, vandalism, break and enters and family violence.
Then it also begs the question, why is there poverty? There are jobs out there, even if you have to leave Kenora.
