While studying Canadian History at University in 1963. The history professor at the first lecture made the following statement. That Canadian History is the most interesting of all histories. There was a loud groan in the class at his absurd statement. He then went on to explain that great history events are defined chronologically and if you look at the chronological history of Canada you will see big gaps. In order to fill in the gaps you then go to French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, USA and other countries history and you can read between the lines on what the influence of the USA and European's were to Canada at that time period. I still use that professor's advice for thinking the world chronologically and how Canada fits into the big picture.

We have such a rich history as a nation. Locally, this area played a huge part in the fur trade, mining, military and railway history. For a person to be truly proud of their country, they need to know the past. What happened in our history influences what we are today. Studying the past shows how our rights and values have been slowly eroded.

Our governing officials don't even care. Ask any recent grad a history question and how it affected Canada, and they are clueless. Of course, if people aren't aware of the mistakes of the past, it is all new when governments screw up today

It used to be called Dominion Day and every bit of tradition has been lost. Like every National Holiday like, Victoria Day, Canada Day/Canadien du jour, Thanksgiving etc., have been moved to a Monday to create a long week end. The meaning and tradition are lost forever.

As an expat, I am very aware of our Canadian Heritage and history. It is a shame that more people are not as proud as the expatriate community. We relish the thought of going home and visiting "Sunset Country".

I think it is sad that so few people care about our history. Something as significant as Canada Day is more about a long weekend than it is about celebrating our country. Ask anyone who hasn't sang the national anthem since public school and see if they remember the words. Ask almost anyone when Flag Day is, which celebrates our acceptance of the maple leaf as our national flag. I love Canada! See you at the fireworks!

Our school systems teach more about world history than our own national history. Canadians know more about American history than they do about our own, the First Nations, confederation, etc.

I am North American/Canadian, born and raised, history is our template for the future, everyday we lose a piece of our lifestyles, until we go back and revisit our history, can we fully understand who we are.
