Well here we go again, 48 charges for sexual abuse of children and Mr.Harper gets three years. What a joke. If you rob a bank you get a little more because its money. Again it proves to me that cash is more important than children in this country.

Man sentenced to three years for 48 sex-related charges. Enough said!

It is sickening when you take someone who has committed a B&E and someone who is found guilty of child molestation and they both get the same light sentence. A father in this community sexually abused his step-children for almost 10 years and received a sentence of two years less a day. He is now out back in the community and working in a local business. This is SICK! I think when it comes to sentencing criminals we should be looking South for some lessons in this department.

It seems like the courts are afraid to impose the maximum sentences that crimes deserve. You have people who drink drive and kill somebody, getting a light sentence with some probation. They whine and say they won't re-offend, yet quite often they get caught again. The justice system is a joke, right from the fools who write the laws, the fools who are supposed to enforce the laws.

Having been on the wrong end of the legal system for several years I can tell you from personal experience that the legal system is too easy on serious offenders. I read week after week people getting little or no jail time for violent offenses. What message does this send to teens who are misguided. They do not understand consequences or accountability. The only thing that stopped me was finally being held accountable and having some time, as guest of the Queen [jail], to think of how irresponsible I had been through the years and started to reach out for help to change my ways. When I would listen to my younger cell mates they would laugh and joke about how little time they got and how they are going to continue their life style. The thug life, wanna be gangsters, this is now the glamorous life for some teens and in this reader's opinion things will continue to progressively get worse until the justice system gets serious about these offenders. I thank God for the judge that finally held me accountable.

Until we stop the practice of making private lawyers judges, we will never solve the problem. How can we expect someone who has made a career out of getting the lowest possible sentence or judgment for their client to then give the maximum sentence someone defended by their former colleagues?
We need a judge stream for law schools separate from the practising lawyers. We need minimum sentences for deliberate crimes like rape and drug smuggling and hand gun possession. We need a sliding scale for sex with minors, with a life time imprisonment with no parole for anyone (even teenagers) having sex with a child who hasn't reached puberty, since we know if they are released they will re-offend and hurt someone again.

What a joke! You have people on bail committing murder, young offenders working the system because you know it is easy on them, people with loads of unpaid fines and judges who are either incapable or unwilling to impose maximum sentences. At this point in time, the only people the justice system is hard on, are the victims.

I think it is time that people are named for crimes done, if a young offender can steal a car and kill someone, then the community needs to know who to look out for, quit coddling some of these young offenders. Jail is a joke. Do the crime do the time, and all of it, not get five years and do six months.

No. We have all heard the stories. I applaud the Winnipeg newspapers and radio stations for keeping this issue on the front pages as much as possible. I wonder why our own media do not make as much of an issue of this? The Conservatives said for years that if they ever get into power, they'll fix the problem. I voted for them....and I'm still waiting on that promise.
