I recall the beautiful flower gardens and rock gardens surrounding the CPR train station and what is now just a dirty old parking lot.....Kenora you have a problem. Progress and the automobile has become the priority over green matters of the environment.

We are making strides in Kenora to go greener, but the food industry needs to find new ways to package the take out. Perhaps we could encourage folks to test their boat motors for efficiency, and we need more walking and biking paths for the summer. Just a few little things can make a big difference over the years.

Most likely Kenora has the most expensive garbage dumping system in the country. Other than the two blocks of downtown there is garbage litter everywhere. Of course right now you can not see the litter because the two foot thistle weeds are covering it up. The first thing they need to do is lower the dumping fees and more people may actually use it.

Kenora, Ontario, Canada have not been participants of the husbandry of our forests and associated environment like certain Nordic countries. It's a pleasure to experience the park like atmosphere of the outdoors in the latter countries as they have eliminated the scrub trees and other nuisance growth not only for human participation, but also for the many animals and wild berries and mushrooms etc., that thrive in this atmosphere. The forest trees also expand and accelerate their growth as they do not have to share the moisture and other nutrients... It can never be green enough.

It is a tough sell, if it is going to cost more money. We have a large sector of our local population who are on fixed incomes. By the time they are gouged for taxes, gasoline and groceries, they have little disposable income left.
Add to that the fact that the two most populated countries in the world (China and India) are doing little or nothing to stop air polution and water polution. All in the same time they are becoming industrial giants. The same goes for smaller players like Singapore and Malaysia.
Why does it fall on our shoulders again, to bail the world out of a problem we all created?

Do we want a cleaner planet?
It's not rocket science!

I think we have done enough already! With the shutting down of the paper mill, we have cut greenhouse gas emissions, stopped the accumulation of sludge at the Margach dump, eliminated the chemicals left in solution that were dumped into the Winnipeg River, stopped the fly ash from the steam plant, reduced the use of natural gas by millions of cubic ft. per year, eliminated the sulphur airborne emissions from the sulphite mill, eliminated thousands of tons of water vapour that were exhausted off the paper machines and eliminated a major hydro electric load, that allows Abitibi to sell power into the Hydro One grid thus eliminating the need for some of the coal powered electrical generation.
We should get some kind of reward for our 'sacrifices'!

Kenora is a tough audience for a "go greener" cause. Look at Rabbitt Lake - this used to be a nice clean little lake, now it's scary that kids even swim in it, it actually smells at times. Kenorans want their snowmobile trails, their limit of four walleyes, and their monthly Thistles celebrations. Unless you are affecting one of those, you not going to attract much of an audience...

Get rid of the geese on the "Green" belt. That will go a long way in keeping it green.
