Having recently moved here from another province, we are very happy with Kenora for our kids. The only drawback was the religious-based schooling, that was like going back in time a little and is still hard to take, especially for the kids as they were free and clear of that nonsense previously. Otherwise, Kenora is great.

Kenora is a racist town, no matter where you go or who you come into contact with, you can cut the tensions with a knife. I myself is of mixed race both native and non native I get the negative comments on both sides. I do not believe that Kenora is a good place to raise a family but I am a resident due to work reasons. I have friends of different races and it appears that minorities get the short end. Alcoholism is a disease and does affect our community many negative and racist remarks have been made towards the street people and towards natives in this community. It is time that all residents in Kenora try to get along with one another as we are all contributors to the the community economically, for God's sake end this negative tension and come together in unity for all not just for the so called superior race!
Kenora would be more popular if....  ( July 10, 2007)
There are economic problems everywhere. What really surprised me when I moved to Kenora was how cold residents are to newcomers to the community. Kenora is based on cliques and elementary school friendships, and my goodness - if you weren't born here, good luck getting your child onto a travelling sports team, or becoming a welcomed resident. When I moved to Kenora I was told that you have to spend 10 years here to get accepted. I thought it was a joke - joke was on me, Kenora people befriend Kenora people in Kindergarten. Period.

Kenora has a bad rep for being rude to the Tobans who visit here. Well wake up - tourists make up a huge chuck of our economics and with a decling natural resource base we need to really step up how we treat those people who are really keeping our town alive.

Between the street dwellers openly drinking at the LCBO and by the old Adams block, the chilly reception we give people who move here because they want to, and the public school system's poor provincial performance we really are lacking in many areas and turning off potential life-long residents.

Check any local newspaper and read about school-yard fights, vandalism, public intoxication etc. Yes there are too many intoxicated people hanging around our city streets but these people keep to themselves. Move somewhere else and you can deal with guns on the streets. Some city schools even have metal detectors for their student safety. There are many things to do in this town, just get off your behind and do it. Walking in our beautiful outdoors is plentiful and free. See if you can get that in some bigger centres. The beaches are only five minutes away not an hour. Make Kenora the best in can be. Get involved like the KBI and Harbourfest committee does.

Kenora was once a great place to raise kids. There is nothing to keep them here! Kenora is dying town, we have the lake and that's about it!

I like the sports and recreational opportunities that my kids have access to here. I do not like the things they periodically see when in the downtown area on most any day of the year.

Kenora was a good place years ago too raise a family. What we need to make it good again is a large employer to move into the old mill site. We need a place that gives people at least a $40,000 a year wage. Eight dollars an hour doesn't cut it.

Public drunkenness, cops, dogcatchers called and used in neighbours fights, vandalism, physical fighting at schools and on the streets. Disrespect for each other. Sure is something every child should be exposed to don't you think?

It used to be. Now with the loss of the mill and woodlands jobs, the loss of OPP dispatch jobs, a council and provincial government who are out of touch with reality, it's not a good place.
Following post secondary education, why would a person return to Kenora? There isn't an economic future.

It is fabulous here. I was born and raised here also and have yet to have a desire to move. Sure there are tough times, regarding employment and opportunities but that is the same virtually everywhere. This city has everything and is making an effort to continue to grow, if you don't like it leave... but you will be back.
