Unions were necessary at the beginning of the 20th century, but in modern times they have morphed into just another special interest group with too much power.

If you feel that unionized workers have better wages, pensions and other benefits, why don't you unionize? There is no law that says retail workers can not unionize. All you need to do is to get the majority of your fellow workers to commit for unionization, pick a union to join and there it is. As for the strike being called now, the government had all spring and summer to negotiate a contract but they preferred to take the summer off.

While I normally support strikes, parents may have saved for many years to try to send their child to school. Students may have also worked hard for the last several summers to finally be able to go to school. This should have been dealt with in the summer. Secondary education is expensive and shouldn't be affected by a strike.

To all union bashers: if it wasn't for the unions you all would be working for nothing; no benefits, dental plans etc. we would be all working like the third world countries while businesses, governments etc. would be raking in more money than you give them now. You know the new car, or boat your home? Guess what? You would not have it.

It's pretty disgusting when teachers do this crap during the school year. Way to go teachers! Way to screw up your students' school year! Unions are horrible these days.

it always seems that everyone is happy the way they are treated at work and condemn anyone who wants to fight for what they believe is right. All I hear in this city is how poorly everyone is treated by their employer; no benefits, no money, no hours, no pension. The list goes on. Fight for it and stop preaching at the ones who do.

Another teacher's union driving Ontario into the ground and raising the cost of education. These instructors should be held personally accountable and pay the students back the money lost, tuition and cost of living.

The question could be reworded to "Do you support college students paying for an education and not receiving it?"

I don't support any kind of strikes. Especially in the education sector, people pay for these services and should not be subjected to labour rifts. Also the strikers never gain back what they have lost in pay. Be patient and keep negotiating.

Unions were a good thing years ago. Now they just keep on asking/demanding more. When you look at all the non union employees in retail and the abuses they are subjected to, it is hard to sympathize with union issues.
