Just be greatful the power outage was when it was. The backup plan was to shut it off on Mother's Day. Can you imagine the complaining that would have happened, if they had implementing such a poor backup plan.

It really doesn't make sense. The power outage was advertised really well, and so was the pancake breakfast. No one expected stores/restaurants to stay open during the outage. The choice was theirs, and if it didn't work out in their favour then that is the roll of the dice. If any businesses were out money and think to blame the city, they might as well blame Kenora for rain during a Harborfest weekend too.

The power being out was of no concern to me. I took a trip to International Falls to shop. House reno time! Hope the power goes out soon again, we will go to the casino in Winnipeg.

We enjoyed cooking breakfast outdoors on the bbq., real perked coffee and actual conversation. This outage was well planned. It is the ones beyond human control that we need to worry about and plan for. The sound of silence was so noticable. No music, appliance sounds, computer games etc. Just silence and the birds singing. Congrats to the crews on the project.

Peter's comment about the free pancake breakfast competing with local business is a load of bull. The event was well advertised and those that chose to open or rent generators did so of their own accord. Wal-Mart certainly didn't suffer because Kenora Hydro offered up some good will as a result of inconvenience to their customers. With attitudes like that the city can't win no matter what they do.

What bothers me about this whole thing is the FREE pancake business. There were businesses within city limits (at least 3 I know of) that were open and ready to provide breakfast for those who may not have been prepared. One endured quite a financial outlay to truck in a monster generator. So what's the town do? In their infinite wisdom they decide to stick it to these businesses and compete against them, and unfairly at that by offering breakfast for free or at least the expense of the taxpayer. Many businesses took a hugh financial hit on Sunday. Rather than supporting the local businesses that could or made efforts to cater to the people, the City in a sense took away business by becoming a restaurant for that one very day. Many of us are happy to support local business, too bad the City does not.

There was an overwhelming amount of advertising of this event so yes, we were as prepared as we could be. I think the hardest thing was going without that morning coffee. Other than that, it was nice that the TV wasn't on.

It was a good exercise in how dependant we are. No major inconvenience. I laughed when I heard about the huge lineup at McDonalds in Walmart for breakfast. I went to the Harbourfront breakfast. Everything was great! Maybe a 10 minutes wait. And it was Free! Plus many of those unselfish folk went out from there and picked up garbage around town. Kudos to all involved.

Can you ever be prepared for a power outage? We will be shocked on how dependant we are on electricity. I also wonder what is in the works as Hydro One is doing major work on something the day before Kenora's major work not to mention that the billing period and due date on my most recent bill has been shortened up and I have to pay up after three weeks instead of the usual four week billing cycle. Are we going to be surprised by yet another hidden sale of one of the City of Kenora's only remaining utilities companies?

With the long notice re the outage, there is no reason for anyone not to be ready. Yes, it is an inconvenience. However it shows us how dependent we are on electricity.
Imagine an uncontrolled, unplanned outage such as in ice storm or tornado. Most folks would be screwed. Fortunatly in this case the outage is well planned and coordinated, it isn't cold out and it is short lived.
