I think the crunch has not hit yet from the closing of the mills. The economy in Kenora seems to be slowing down. I'm not spending as much in fear of losing my job, so I am trying to save money. I'm sure others feel the same.

Things will get worse.. We are losing our identity as a community with the take-over of the Kenora Police Service by the OPP. The loss of our forest industry with nothing to replace it. Selling of our Telephone system. The resistance to tourism by the population. No vision of the future by our municipal council. It is a downhill slide unless we set goals for our future and the future of our children.

THANKS to council, things are going to get better for Kenora. Our council is moving forward and their decisions will benefit our town. The big spruce is making our downtown more attractive and up to date, the traffic circle is working extremely well and has been keeping traffic flowing, the new police force will be a plus for our town (good-bye lawsuits!) and things can only get better from here. Council will not prevent the poor economy but they certainly deserve our appreciation for attempting to keep Kenora afloat. No, I'm not related to anyone on council, nor do I personally know any of them, but watching them make decisions to keep our town progressing has made me proud of them.

I like optimistic's idea of finding an existing building to house the fire department (instead of building new). One would hope members of council have explored that option, or is that expecting too much?

I think Kenora will get worse before things get better due to the economy and the dependence on forestry and tourism. We need a strong leadership that is visionary in order to balance the community needs such as economic, social development. We need a community plan with long term goals and we need to be inclusive of all people.

Hopefully 2009 will bring fiscal responsibility to council. There is an option to a 5 million dollar firehall. We do need the hall but I am sure that there is one old Abitibi building available for a quarter of that price.

Things won't change until we can get a whole new council.
