Right on JD. Absolutely true. The basics are being lost in the wave of electronic aids. Along with that goes the ability to think and reason responsibly. There is very little or no self pride in setting goals or achieving. Being a self starter is rare. If you do find such an individual their abilities can usually be tied more directly to their family guidance than their educational influence.

Sure there are more opportunities. However, not a loot of life skills to use after school and on the job. I hire students as vacation fill ins. I have to interview a lot to get one or two that I feel might be good employees.
I find they are useless without electronic assistance. No problem solving skills, not a lot of memory retention and the ability to talk to strangers AKA customers is poor.
They need a lot more "hands on" learning and a lot more "turn off your electronics" learning.

While they do have more educational opportunities than I had when I attended school, the end result isn't very encouraging. Before retiring, I used to hire casual and summer employees. I tried to hire students where possible however, there were a lot of issues that ended up in termination. They can't commit to an 8 or 12 hour shift. Heaven forbid that they may have to work weekends. They would rather spend time texting etc. than working. Without a computer or other media, they can not perform mental calculations. They can not handle being criticized or disciplined. They do not look for tasks to keep busy and require a lot of supervision.
I am not saying all of the students that I interviewed or hired were like that. There were some that were great self-starters, motivated, pleasant and willing to learn. It was a pleasure to have had them as employees and I follow their careers today. There needs to be a lot more hands on type education. No computers, no calculators. Biggest thing they need to be taught is that yes you will fail in life, there is no free pass in life and if you work hard you can have a great career.

It's probably about the same, technology has definitely changed things but the real education comes from getting out in the real world. There are probably less jobs out there to try and I haven't heard lately of too many apprenticeships offered.
