Cost of living in Kenora is high. No wonder why the kids that are getting out of high school want to leave. Groceries, taxes, rent, gas, utilities and general living expenses are through the roof. We are close to retirement and leaving Kenora has crossed our mind. Having communities near us that do not pay taxes makes me wonder how much we pay for them... it's not fair at all! This may really hurt us now and in the future./
Double and out  ( June 9, 2017)
Just read the news article about how our taxes may have to double by the year 2025. (If other revenue sources aren't found.) If that were to happened, were outa here.

With the prospect of taxes "DOUBLING" over the next eight years, it is time to think about relocation. That is ridiculous. Start cutting jobs at city hall, rec center, work thing on the hill etc. Perhaps even contracting out garbage pick up and some snow removal.
Time for council to stop thinking we are bigger than we are. We are three towns stuck together by some legislation in Toronto.
The residential rate payers are being drained. The last census shows seniors make up a large portion of our population. Ergo bearing the brunt of ludicrous assessments and tax increases.
Time to get a lot of the people who don't pay taxes, but demand services to start paying their way.
Live in the city  ( June 9, 2017)
How about employees that don't even live in city limits to pay the taxes, both now and former employees, some made big bucks, longbow, pellat etc.

If you're concerned now, just wait another seven and a half years:

“By the year 2025, it's estimated that we're going to have to at least double our taxes. In Kenora's case, it might be more than that."

The city really knows how to take away the minimum wage increase away thats coming up.

Why does this town council not look at how Dryden does business? This council spends money like it grows on trees and everyone knows it dosen't. This tax increase will be the last straw for my family and hopefully a lot more. We have decided to sell and move out. We cannot afford it anymore. My pension just gets me by now this is the nail in the coffin.

The rising costs of sewer water rates now a somewhat hefty tax increase, maybe times call for some desperate measures. How about some cuts to the palaces on the hill and then trickle down to the main office? The people who live here cannot keep absorbing these increases. Where are the results from the hiring of the new business development officer?

As a retiree on a fixed income, I find Kenora getting too expensive. Between raises in assessments tax increases and higher user fees, we cash cows are getting taken advantage of. It is time for the commercial sector to step up and pay the larger portion of the tax base, not the residential sector.

I was hoping to retire here but with the cost of utilities and the exhorbadent taxes, I will probably have to make other plans. There is no way individuals should be expected to make up the brunt of taxes. There should be more being done to attract a large industry.
